What are Gayborhoods - 1700 Words

Surprisingly one of, if not the, safest and some of the most prosperous neighborhoods one can live in are gayborhoods. A gayborhood is defined as an area of a city with a concentration of businesses that cater to a largely homosexual client base (Eyre 2007). In other words, gayborhoods are where gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and/or transgender peoples live. Research has shown that these communities have keen economic and sociological effects on urban areas brought on by large gentrification from homosexuals. Gay meccas continue to flourish every year and are providing substantial benefits to the cities in which they reside in. Furthermore, gayborhoods has a wide range of ethnic, racial and socioeconomic groups. One such initiative was to ban homosexuals from teaching within public schools. Luckily this proposition was disbanded thanks to Milk and gay activists at the time. As mentioned earlier, Dan White killed Harvey Milk. However, the court gave him a slap on the wrist and was given only a limited time in jail. Thus, causing one of the largest riots in San Francisco history occurred in the Civic Center Plaza, The White Riot (Stewart-Winter, 2009). Years after Dan was released he committed suicide. Though these troubled issues hurt the gay community, it ultimately brought them together even stronger. They continued to expand their businesses and work towards equal rights for homosexuals. Once the Reagan administration came along, more conservatives tried to diminish the rising communities. But they were unsuccessful due to more gay politics opposing these motives. Once it seemed like the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community was on its way to achieving equality they were struck hard by the AIDS epidemic in the eighties. It is important to note that the disease did not only effect homosexuals, but it effecte d heterosexuals as well. But is a known fact that more homosexuals suffered from the disease than heterosexuals.
